Structure and Current Extent of MOPA

Each village level society and Regional society have office bearers namely President, Secretary, Wise president, wise secretary, treasure for administrational works who has been democratically elected by their bi annual general meetings for administrational assistance to the association. Each president of village level will represent the desired region in bi annual general assembly to elect their officer bearers for the region. These elected regional presidents will represent the board of management for bringing them for advance democracy of the association in decision making level.

Current Status

MOPA is handling Fairtrade premium projects since 2010. Organization works with over fifty farmer village societies which consists of more than 1397 individual farmer members and continuously receiving the premium money from many buying partners of the world and MOPA arranges many livelihood development programs with these funds to ensure  Social/Environmental or economic development of members or it’s community by an organic way. The all development projects were approved by the annual general meeting of the association and frequently monitored by the appointed staff members for closing of accounts within the financial year. From the start of MOPA has spent sum of 340 million LKR for these livelihood development projects so far up to date.

The current economic crisis in the world/Island and political instability in the country has also severely affected our farmer members and MOPA has established various projects to help them face it and improve their livelihood even in these difficult times. Hence we are in an organic way the impact of the crisis could be managed to continuing the practices in their normal life style with aid of MOPA operations specially designed for managing impacts of crisis.

MOPA, Marginalized Organic Producers’ Association launches their “Fairtrade” premium projects which were approved by the AGM (Annual General Assembly) each year for proceeding year’s plan. In the recent proceedings of the association is promoting common livelihood programs instead of individual benefited projects for better outcome and reflection of livelihood development of our members and their family. By the steps of MOPA members are focusing their projects for common beneficiary programs which would be benefited by many of members. All of projects are covering of environmental, socioeconomic aspects of the memberships and its community for the development.

MOPA has conducted variety of trainings for members and extension staff continuously from establishment of the association to uplift their cultivations and families in the aspect of organic and “Fairtrade” certification. Hence our farmer base is being developed with new technology and knowledge of their agricultural practices which ensure best income, democracy, participation and other social benefits.
